Meeting to discuss about the development of a global Geopark in Lang Son province and the organization of Xu Lang’s Peach Blossom Festival in 2024

On the morning of December 12, Mr. Duong Xuan Huyen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee chaired the meeting of the Steering Committee to build a global Geopark in Lang Son province, Organizing Committee of Xu Lang’s Peach Blossom Festival and activities to celebrate a new year – the year of the Dragon in 2024.
Regarding global Geopark in Lang Son province, according to the report at the meeting, in 2023, member agencies of the Steering Committee, all levels, sectors and localities have implemented 8 key tasks according to the plan. Accordingly, propaganda and promotion activities for the Geopark have been carried out by agencies and units in many flexible and creative forms, many propaganda and educational activities about the Geopark have been held, thereby contributing to raising the awareness of community about heritage and Lang Son Geopark.

Regarding the preparation of the application to UNESCO for the recognition of Lang Son Global Geopark, up to now, the Provincial People’s Committee has sent Official Dispatch No. 1714/UBND-KGVX dated November 27, 2023 to the Vietnam National Committee for UNESCO on considering and creating conditions for submitting the application of Lang Son Geopark to UNESCO for appraisal and recognition as a global Geopark. After review, at the end of November 2023, the Vietnam National Committee for UNESCO sent a Note to submit the application of Lang Son Geopark to UNESCO for appraisal and recognition as a global Geopark.
At the meeting, delegates discussed a number of contents related to financial support plan for site clearance compensation, land recovery and investment fund arrangement to build parking lots and other basic infrastructure at tourist attractions in geopark; difficulties and obstacles in adjusting and supplementing the planning and land use plan associated with other plans in some areas of the 4 Geopark tourism routes…
Regarding the organization of Xu Lang’s Peach Blossom Festival and activities to celebrate the Year of the Dragon 2024, according to the report, it is expected that Xu Lang’s Peach Blossom Festival in the year of the Dragon in 2024 will take place from the 26th January, 2024 to March 9, 2024 (ie from 16th of the last lunar month in the year of the Rabbit to the 29th of the first lunar month in the year of the dragon) with many exciting activities taking place at Chi Lang Park, Hung Vuong Street, city Lang Son. There will be some new features in this year’s festival including the participation of delegates who are leaders of the Party, State and a number of ministries, central sectors and international organizations, UNESCO experts and representatives of Japan , South Korea, China…

Speaking at the meeting, regarding the content of building a global Geopark in Lang Son province, the Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee suggested that Steering Committee member agencies continue to coordinate to renew propaganda work, promote education to raise public awareness, enhance international integration and cooperation. He requested the Department of Natural Resources and Environment to actively coordinate with the People’s Committees of districts and Lang Son city to drastically resolve difficulties and obstacles in updating planning and land use plans, to complete infrastructure at tourist destinations on 4 tourist routes in the Geopark area. In particular, the Steering Committee member agencies were asked promote coordination in implementing and completing the criteria before July 2024 in order to well carry out the work of welcoming UNESCO’s expert appraisal delegation.

Regarding the organization of Xu Lang’s Peach Blossom Festival, he decided on the time of the opening ceremony to be 8:00 p.m., January 31, 2024 (ie the 21st of the last lunar month in the year of the Rabbit), at Hung Vuong Street, Chi Lang Ward, Lang Son City. Lang Son City People’s Committee was requested to continue to perform well the work of decorating and completing the “Spring Flower Street” in Chi Lang Park area (Lang Son city), to strengthen propaganda and visual advertisement. Besides, agencies and units in the organizing committee should proactively carry out good coordination in performing tasks, reception and logistics work to ensure security and order, traffic safety, environmental sanitation, food safety and hygiene,… for the festival to take place successfully.
