Launching the 53rd UPU international letter-writing contest

On the afternoon of January 25, the Department of Information and Communications coordinated with the Department of Education and Training to organize the launching ceremony of the 53rd UPU International Letter-writing Contest (in 2024) and summarizing the 52nd Contest (2023), at Hoang Van Thu Secondary School (Lang Son city).

The 53rd UPU International Letter-Writing Contest (2024) was launched by the Universal Postal Union with the theme: “In the past 150 years, the Universal Postal Union (UPU) has served more than 8 generations of people around the world. Since then, the world has changed a lot. Write a letter to future generations about the world you hope they will inherit.”

At the Launching Ceremony, leaders of the Department of Information and Communications and the Department of Education and Training encouraged units and students in the province to participate in the contest. Contest participants are all Vietnamese students from 9 to 15 years old (as of the time of sending letters to participate in the contest). The letter is the student’s personal creative product, written in prose according to the contest’s theme (not yet published in newspapers or books), no longer than 800 words.

According to the contest rules, schools send their entries to the provincial Department of Education and Training; Send entries to the National level contest to Tien Phong and Nhi Dong’s Newspaper, No. 5, Hoa Ma Street, Pham Dinh Ho Ward, Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi City. The envelope should clearly state: Entries for the 53rd UPU International Letter Writing Contest (2024). Contest submission period is from January 5 to March 15, 2024.

Within the framework of the Launching Ceremony, the Competition Organizing Committee summarized and awarded the 52nd UPU International Letter Writing Competition in Lang Son province (2023).  The 52nd UPU International Letter -Writing Contest with the theme “Imagine yourself as a superhero with a mission to make every road in the world safer for children. Write a letter to someone to talk about the supernatural power that will help you complete your mission.” Through the process of organizing and implementing the contest, according to statistics from the Provincial Post Office, the whole province had more than 1,800 valid letters sent by post to participate in the 52nd UPU International Letter-Writing Contest (2023). Through the district education and training divisions, the Organizing Committee of the 52nd UPU International Letter-Writing Contest at the provincial level received 176 entries to participate in the provincial preliminary round. Through the preliminary round, the organizers selected 50 entries to the final round. As a result, 16 individuals and 3 groups were rewarded (1 individual got second prize, 3 third prizes and 12 consolation prizes).

The UPU international letter-writing contest has been a useful and meaningful playground for students for many years. The contest helps students develop their writing skills, enrich their thinking sophistication and contribute to strengthening the friendship between peoples. This is also an opportunity for young people to express their thoughts about the world we live in in the face of global challenges and propose solutions for change. The core of this lies in the goals of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
