Meeting to appraise the design of the monument at October 17 Flower Garden, Lang Son city

On the morning of October 4, the Art Council of the project on the monument at the October 17 Flower Garden held a meeting to appraise the sketch at step 2 of the project.

Attending the meeting were Mr. Duong Xuan Huyen, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, Standing Vice Chairman of the Art Council of the project on the monument at the October 17 Flower Garden; leaders of a number of departments, commissions and sectors of the province and experts in sculpture and fine arts in the country.

It is known that earlier (July 13, 2022) the art council evaluated and selected the sketches at step 1 of the project on the monument at the October 17 Flower Garden and asked the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee for approval. Accordingly, option number 6 (out of 7 sketches at step 1) was selected.

An expert in sculpture explains about the sketches of the monument in October 17 Flower Garden area, Lang Son city

According to the explanation of the expert in sculpture, the overall sketch of the monument of the October 17 Flower Garden area​​​​, Lang Son city (option 6) consists of 3 parts: the group of characters above, the monument part and the pedestal. The cubes are arranged, filtered and connected with each other in terms of shape, block, and at the same time create strength in the pedestal.

In particular, the group of characters above includes 7 typical characters, representing officers, soldiers and ethnic people in Lang Son province with the joy of celebrating the liberation of Lang Son town (now Lang Son city). The body of the monument is arranged as a straight square cylinder, supporting the statue of the characters above. The faces of the square cylinder are arranged by relief cubes. The front of the square cylinder is the word October 17, 1950 Victory, with images of rivers, mountains, star anise and peach blossom. The sides and back of the square cylinder are bas-relief cubic layouts with typical cultural themes of the ethnic groups of Lang Son province. The pedestal of the monument is decorated with the pattern of peach flower as the subject.

At the meeting, the delegates focused on discussing and contributing ideas on editing the sketch of the monument with some main contents such as it was necessary to balance the number of characters, arranging them according to costumes, proportions, sizes, layouts; to research, build motifs, sculptural shapes in accordance with the national cultural identity of the province…

Speaking at the meeting, the Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee suggested the author of the monument coordinating with the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to select typical costumes of the Tay, Nung, and Dao ethnic groups of Lang Son province, in order to make the shaping more appropriate. He also asked the author to edit the structure, sculptural pattern at the body of the monument to further highlight the beauty in the cultural ethnic identity of Lang Son; adding the peach petals that are Lang Son’s trademark on the pedestal of the monument. In addition, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism should coordinate with the People’s Committee of Lang Son city to promote propaganda about the meaning of the project, and urgently ask for the opinions of the people to create a broad consensus.

He also suggested that the sculptor continue to perfect the sketch to have a beautiful monument on schedule. At the same time, he expressed his wish to continue to receive the attention and support of fine art and sculpture experts to create an impressive cultural work, in order to pay tribute to the merits of generations of ancestors in building and defending the country. Thereby, it helps affirm the position of the province in the new period.
