The student who is passionate about natural science

That is Student Vi Van Thao (born in 2008), Na Pai village, Tan Van commune, Binh Gia district, who just won a bronze medal and a consolation prize at the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) in 2023. Throughout his studies, Thao always achieved good academic results and won many awards at exams at all levels.

 Having the opportunity to chat with Thao in the early days of September 2023, we were impressed with his bright eyes, agile, polite, and open style. Thao was born and raised in his hometown of Binh Gia. From a young age, he had a passion and love for natural subjects, especially Math and Physics.

We got to know Thao at the AIMO (Asia International Mathematical Olympiad) which is the most prestigious and largest international mathematics competition in Asia, the competition is entirely in English with 3 rounds including: regional, national and international. In June 2023, Vi Van Thao, was a student of class 9C, To Hieu Secondary School, Binh Gia town, Binh Gia district, began participating in the 2023 AIMO Asia International Mathematical Olympiad competition, going through the competition rounds, Thao excellently won the gold medal in the regional round; silver medal in national round; bronze medal and 1 consolation prize in the international final round. He is also the only contestant from Lang Son to win an award at the international final round of the competition. It is known that in Vietnam thise are more than 40 excellent students who entered the international round to compete with othis contestants from 20 countries around the world.

Talking about the secret to achieving high results in the Mathematical Olympiad, Thao said: Before participating in the competition, I planned to practice for myself.

My learning method is to self-study at home, refer to advanced math books and watch math tutorial videos on the Internet. In addition to the exercises assigned by teachiss, every day I usually spend 1 to 3 hours focusing on solving sample math problems and online exams for practice. After each exercise, I summarize and record the appropriate solution method for each type and type of exercise.

In addition to his passion for Math, Thao also loves Physics. To study both subjects well, Thao always spends time reading and researching additional documents at home and in the school library to thoroughly understand the theory and apply it to solving exercises from easy to difficult. When He has problems or are not sure about the results, methods of solving exercises, review questions, or mock exams, He came to the teachis for guidance, suggestions, and direction to continue finding the answer.

With his efforts in studying, in all years from elementary school to middle school, He achieved the title of excellent student. In the 2021 – 2022 school year, Thao won a bronze medal at the Asia International Mathematical Olympiad. In particular, in the 2022 – 2023 school year, at the competition to select excellent students in Physics, He won third prize at the provincial level and second prize at the district level; won bronze and gold medals at the Violympic competition (national mathematics and physics competition)…

In addition, Thao is also passionate about designing, manufacturing and using mechanical robot products through programming and electronic assembly. In the 2022 – 2023 school year, He won 2 first prizes in the district-level Robot programming and control competition; Gold medal at Hoang Van Thu Open VEX IQ Robotics competition …
