Provincial Vietnamese Student Association: Accompanying students in study and practice

In the 2018 – 2023 term, the Vietnamese Student Association of Lang Son province has concretized action programs and implemented many activities to accompany students in study and practice. Thereby, it contributes to building a class of students with knowledge, professional skills, social skills and confidence to participate in the labor market.

Ms. Le Thuy Dung, Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Youth Union, President of the Provincial Vietnamese Student Association said: “In the province, there are 4 colleges (Lang Son Educational College; Lang Son Medical College; Lang Son Vocational College, Northeast College of Technology and Agro-forestry) with more than 1,400 members and students. From the beginning of the 2018 – 2023 term, the Executive Committee of the Provincial Vietnamese Student Association has requested units to research and carry out many new types of activities suitable to the psychology and aspiration of students; to promptly notice good models at the grassroots level for replication; to regularly organize political activities among all members to foster their revolutionary ideals, to educate on moral, lifestyle, awareness in law observance and civic responsibility. Especially, each member of the Executive Committee, based on their assigned tasks, closely follows the grassroots to promptly remove difficulties and problems, to propose new measures and solutions to improve the quality of association’s works and student movements, creating a favorable environment for students to strive, practice and participate in meaningful activities to the community.

In this term, the highlight is the activity of accompanying students in learning, creativity and scientific research. At the beginning of each school year, the student associations of schools advise their board of directors to assign teachers guiding students in scientific research, to create subject clubs, to organize skill, professional competitions, competitions for creativity and application of science and technology, seminars on scientific research providing students with an effective learning environment.

The Vietnamese Student Associations at all levels also promote the implementation of the campaign “One student one creative idea”, organize contests  to seek creative ideas, start-ups and student creativity days to encourage students to recommend and implement ideas in work, study and life. Additionally, Associations at grassroots level also proactively build and issue solutions to create an environment for students to participate in scientific research, to promote and apply scientific research products and topics into practice. Activities encouraging reading habits and building a “reading culture” among students are maintained by student associations of schools in many forms such as organizing reading culture festivals, competitions to learn about books, introducing good books, books serving specialized fields…

Mr. Nguyen Van Hai, President of the Student Association of Northeast College of Technology and Agro-forestry, said: “We consider accompanying students in learning vocational skills and social practice skills our key mission. Therefore, in recent years, the association has advised the school’s board of directors to organize and implement many practical activities such as organizing and participating in competitions about skills and start-ups at all levels; coordinating with businesses to provide students practical experience… During the 2018 – 2023 term, the Student Association of Northeast College of Technology and Agro-forestry has 50 students participating in skill competitions at ministerial and central levels, including 12 students who won prizes. Many students after graduating have been accepted to companies inside and outside the province.”

Besides accompanying students in their studies, the student associations of the schools also actively carry out volunteer activities to create an environment for students to contribute and practice social skills. The programs “Support for examination season”, “Support those coming to school”, “Blue summer” are implemented by the student associations with various activities. On this occasion, students from schools proactively joined volunteer teams to support candidates participating in the national high school exam, to support new students in school admission; to participate in local volunteer activities such as supporting to organize summer activities for children, to help children review knowledge during the summer, to concrete roads, remove advertisements on the streets… with thousands of young participants.

In particular, during the complicated development of the COVID – 19 pandemic (2019 – 2021), 200 officials and students volunteered to go to provinces and cities in the Southern region to participate in pandemic prevention. Moreover, voluntary blood donation activities receive great attention from a large number of students, the student associations of schools also establish student volunteer blood donation clubs and teams, they maintain and develop a living blood bank ready to donate blood to save lives; teach volunteer students on how to mobilize people from all walks of life to participate in blood donation… Typically, Lang Son Medical College Youth Union has encouraged 5,000 people to participate in blood donation with more than 3,000 blood units.

Vi Hoai Thuong, student of K18MN, Lang Son College of Education, said: “The school’s Student Association has many activities for us to participate in studying and showing our strengths and talents such as creating study clubs, organizing physical and skill training activities… These activities help me gain more knowledge and skills needed in life and work in the future. Thanks to that, I successfully completed the training content of the title “5-Good Student”. During my studying and training, I was recognized as a “5-good student” at the provincial level.”

In addition, the student associaions of the schools also accompany students to improve their physical health and international integration skills through cultural, arts, and sports activities on anniversaries and holidays of the year; activities to equip professional skills, social skills, improving foreign language and information technology skills… Activities are organized in many forms, suitable to abilities, strengths, and interests of the students, thus creating a vibrant emulation movement, attracting a large number of college students in the province to participate.

In the 2018 – 2023 term, the whole province achieved and exceeded 7/8 targets, including some exceedingly high targets such as 3,433 creative ideas, initiatives, and solutions in all fields of association members and students, reaching 1,700% of the plan; associations at all levels have awarded 435 scholarships to students who overcame difficulties to achieve good study reslt, reaching 145% of the planned target;…

Through the association’s activities, students in the province have been equipped with useful knowledge and skills to be ready for labor market and quickly integrate and adapt to working environments when recruited. In the coming time, the Student Association will continue to research and propose many solutions to improve the effectiveness of the companionship with student in learning and training.

In the 2018 – 2023 term, the student associations in the province organized over 200 cultural, arts, and sports playgrounds attracting over 5,400 students, more than 100 extracurricular sessions providing information on psychology, health, gender, love, marriage, family, career and employment, attracting over 4,300 students.

The Provincial Student Association established 130 volunteer teams with 2,800 students participating in helping 2,300 candidates with difficult circumstances participating in the national high school exam, worth 540 million VND, supported 435 students in difficult circumstances in remote areas to return home for Tet with a total value of over 230 million VND, participated in voluntary blood donation with over 2,000 units of blood.

During the term, the whole province had 4 units and 98 individuals achieved the title of “5-Good Students” at the provincial level; 1,325 students and 35 units achieved the title of “5-Good Student” at the school level.
