Lang Son promotes use of glass water bottles

(LSO) – Many agencies in Lang Son province have switched from single-use plastic water bottles to glass ones in response to the campaign against plastic waste launched by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Over the past three months, glass bottles have replaced plastic ones at all meetings of residential area no. 2 in Vinh Trai ward, Lang Son city.

The residential area has popularised the campaign to prevent plastic waste and reduce single-use plastic bottles among locals, said Luc Van Tim, head of the residential area, adding that his locality bought 20 glass bottles, along with jars and glasses for local meetings.

The switch has helped to cut spending on plastic bottles and raise public awareness of this issue.

“My family has started using glass bottles and jars daily,” Tim said.

In response to the campaign, the People’s Committee of Vinh Trai ward has pushed ahead with the communication work among officials, Party members and people.

According to Hoang Thi Diem Phuong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People’s Council of Vinh Trai ward, the movement has spread in the ward’s residential areas.

Nguyen Van Hanh, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said the city has issued documents encouraging the People’s Committees of wards and communes and local agencies to joint such efforts.

Therefore, plastic bottles have no longer been used at meetings at not only the city level but also the grassroots ones, he said.

Despite various difficulties, the mountainous district of Trang Dinh has actively engaged in the movement.

Nong Van Lam, deputy chief of the office of the district People’s Committee, said glass bottles and jars have been used at meetings of all levels in Trang Dinh instead of single-use plastic bottles.

In 2019, the provincial People’s Committee has issued specific documents guiding all-level agencies and organisations to take action against plastic waste, contributing to environmental protection.

The Vietnam Fatherland Front of Lang Son province also signed a coordination programme with the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment to fight plastic waste during the 2019-2021 period.
