The leader of the Provincial People’s Committee works with UNESCO Office in Vietnam

On the morning of February 23, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee chaired a working session with the delegation of UNESCO Office in Vietnam led by Mr. Christian Manhart, Chief Representative of UNESCO Office in Vietnam on assessment and completion of the application for recognizing Lang Son Geopark as a global geopark by UNESCO.

Lang Son Geopark was established in 2021 within the administrative scope of 5 districts including Bac Son, Binh Gia, Chi Lang, Huu Lung, and Van Quan. After more than a year of establishment and operation, the Management Board of Lang Son Geopark has been coordinating with consulting unit to investigate, survey, additionally research, evaluate and rank heritages; advertising, promoting tourism and raising public awareness about heritage and Lang Son Geopark; participating in activities of the global geopark network of UNESCO; inviting international and domestic consultants to develop, evaluate and complete the application and submit it to UNESCO for recognition of a global geopark.

At the meeting, the Chief Representative of UNESCO Office in Vietnam highly appreciated the potentials in Lang Son Geopark and affirmed that UNESCO experts would always be ready to share experiences and support Lang Son province to complete the application and build a global geopark in accordance with the proposed roadmap.

Speaking at the meeting, the Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee emphasized: “Lang Son Geopark is preserved intact and we reasonably, sustainably exploit and use the overall values of geological and geomorphological heritages, natural landscape, cultural identity, biodiversity. In the coming time, the province will continue to implement 12 key tasks in the Project on establishment, construction and development of Lang Son Geopark in the 2021-2025 period, meeting the criteria for recognition of a global geopark by UNESCO.”

The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee expressed his wish to receive more attention of UNESCO in supporting the province to build and develop Lang Son Geopark, as well as its assistance in completing the application for recognition of a global Geopark by UNESCO and to promote cooperation in other areas which are also the strengths of Lang Son province such as culture, heritage, training of human resources, environmental protection, sustainable development…

After the meeting, the delegation conducted a field survey at Na Duong Coal Mine (Loc Binh district) and Chi Lang Victory Gallery, Chi Lang Pass (Chi Lang district). Previously, on February 22, 2023, the delegation surveyed some locations in Lang Son Geopark including Huu Lung, Van Quan, Binh Gia and Bac Son districts
