A lecturer who donated blood 41 times

Over the years, the voluntary blood donation movement in the province has really created a far-reaching influence among the people in general and Lang Son Medical College in particular. To get those results, there have been active individuals in the encouragement and participation in blood donation such as Vuong Van Thang (born in 1983), manager of the Organization – Administration – Finance Division in Lang Son Medical College.

Vuong Van Thang shared: “I serve the medical sector, so I understand the importance of blood for patients who are under treatment and emergency. Since 2003, I have been donating blood. Up to now, it has been 41 times (15 times of blood donation, 25 times of platelet donation and 1 time of emergency blood donation for patients at Provincial General Hospital).”

Talking about platelet donation, Thang added: “There are many different components in our blood such as red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, plasma. Each of them has certain functions. For example, platelets are very small cell fragments that participate in the clotting process, living in only about 7-10 days and it only takes 21 days from one platelet donation to another. Currently, it is only the National Institute of Hematology – Blood Transfusion that is eligible to collect platelet blood. Therefore, since 2019, I have come to the National Institute of Hematology – Blood Transfusion to donate for 25 times.”

Along with that, as the Head of the Voluntary Blood Donation Club of Lang Son Medical College, Thang encourages the students to join the club and participate in blood donation activities and movements such as propaganda and encouragement of blood donation; supporting the Provincial Red Cross in receiving blood and taking care of blood donors at blood donation days such as the Red Spring Festival – Red Sunday; Red Journey… Besides, the members of the club also actively participated in the suddent blood donation at the Provincial General Hospital. Since its establishment (2016) until now, the club has had 20 members participating in sudden emergency blood donation for patients.

Not only in the voluntary blood donation movement, Thang also found information about the registration for tissue and organ donation. Therefore, from 2020, Thang has successfully registered and been granted a registration card for tissue and organ donation. He is one of the pioneers in the province to register for tissue and organ donation.

In his professional work, from 2015 until now, Thang has always won the title of good teacher at the grassroots level. Along with that, he has always actively participated in scientific research, chaired many research projects in the medical field, all of which achieved good or better results.

Ms. Nong Bich Thuan, Chairwoman of the Provincial Red Cross Society said: “Over the years, the Voluntary Blood Donation Club of Lang Son Medical College in general and Vuong Van Thang in particular have made many contributions to the sustainable development of the province’s voluntary blood donation movement. Thang is not only a typical face in the voluntary blood donation movement but also a bright example for the school’s students and other individuals and classes to study and follow.”

With typical achievements in the voluntary blood donation movement, over the years, Mr. Vuong Van Thang has been recognized and honored by the authorities at all levels and related sectors. Especially at the end of July, 2023, he was honored to be one of 100 people to attend the “Honoring Ceremony for 100 typical national voluntary blood donors in 2023” organized by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation and the Central Vietnam Red Cross Society, the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion.
